In 2010, with Africa's first ever World Cup approaching, scientists at the University of Pretoria released an interesting piece of research on the subject of the vuvuzela, the plastic horn that fans blow during matches to produce a loud and grating noise. The research confirmed what many people already feared: the horn can cause deafness, potentially even leading to those affected launching negligence claims.
The research team attended a professional soccer match, joining a crowd of around 30,000, and found that the vuvuzela can produce noise levels of up to 140db.
When it is considered that, even when wearing earplugs, people should not be exposed to noise levels of above 137db, the research findings inevitably led to questions of whether football's governing body, FIFA, would ban the horns.
However, FIFA seemed to hold firm in its belief that the vuvuzela should remain a part of the 2010 World Cup.
Sep Blatter, the organisation's president commented, "I have always said that when we go to South Africa, we go to Africa, it's noisy, it's something else than in western parts of the world, it is drums, so we have to adapt a little."
Yet, with scientists being unanimous in agreeing that the human ear cannot adapt to such intense noise levels, it is entirely possible that FIFA could be facing a deluge of post-World Cup hearing loss negligence claims.
Professor De Wet Swanepoel, one of the researchers said of the hazard, "The peak exposure during the research was over 140dB. The intensity far exceeds the noise levels on a construction site or in the mines, which is 85dB."
And, should any England fans report experiencing deafness as a result of the hazardous horns, it is entirely possible that no win, no fee claims may develop.
