MRSA is not the only serious infection to put patients at risk

Action to combat the so-called superbugs MRSA and clostridium difficile appear to be having some effect, however, rates of infection from less well-known bacterial pathogens such as e-coli and klebsiella seem to be increasing dramatically.

With around 300,000 infections being diagnosed in hospitals in England each year and at least 30,000 people having died from the effects of these two most notorious germs in the five years from 2004 to 2008, there is no room for complacency, despite improvements to hospital hygiene as a result of new government and NHS guidelines.

MRSA bloodstream infections had fallen by 74 per cent since 2003/04 and C-difficile infections by 35 per cent between 2007/08 and 2008/009, according to Department of Health figures.

A virulent strain of e-coli has been linked to surgical site infections and urinary tract problems while klebsiella can cause pneumonia among other potentially-fatal illnesses.

After the major publicity about MRSA in the past few years, it seems lack of checks appear to be allowing other similar bacterial infections to go un-registered. A voluntary reporting scheme shows a 30% rise of these infections between 2003 and 2007.

We are all subject to dozens of germs around us in the everyday world and most healthy bodies are able to resist the ongoing attacks, sometimes supplemented by taking antibiotics. Unfortunately, some groups of vulnerable people struggle to fight off the germs, including children, elderly people, those with compromised immune systems and hospital patients, especially those who have had operations.

Health authorities, and particularly hospital managements, have a duty of care to their patients and occasionally, through lack of care, lack of training or poor practices, patients can become victims of medical negligence and deserve to be recompensed for their suffering and personal injury.
