More women involved in motorbike accidents as numbers of female bikers increase

With the ever-continuing rise in women motorcyclists there is of course a correlation in the amount of women riders who become involved in motorbike accidents. Although women so far have been cited as safer motorbike riders than their male counterparts, as roads get busier and accident levels rise, more women will undoubtedly become the victims of motorbike injury.

Last year more than 10,500 women took their motorcycle training practical test and, in research carried out by the Post Office, 14% of women questioned said that they would consider motorbike riding as a way to save money. It appears that the rising costs of car driving are encouraging more and more female drivers to swap four wheels for two in an effort to save the ever- decreasing amount of disposable income that they are left with each month.

A spokesperson for the Women's International Motorbike Association, WIMA GB, said, "Our members love the freedom of being on a motorbike, but more and more women are talking about the financial benefits too."

Women bikers have been in a huge minority in recent years, but research carried out by the University of Huddersfield's Motorcycle Consumer Research unit now shows that 1 in 5 licensed motorcyclists is a woman and the figures are set to keep rising.

Motorbike designers are beginning to see a niche for new bike designs tailored around women's bodies and all-female bike clubs are flourishing around the country. Motorbike clothing manufacturers are increasing their lines for the female motorbike rider and websites dedicated to women motorcyclists are easily found on the internet, with specialist events taking place all round the country.

Research has shown that, proportionately, women motorbike riders are safer than male motorcyclists with fewer women involved in motorbike accidents. Furthermore, while men remain reluctant to take up further training after passing their motorcycle test, women demonstrate greater interest in advanced rider development training after they have obtained their license.
