Why has there been a rise in motorcycle accidents in Sussex?
Motorcycle accidents are one of the most common causes of death and serious injury on UK roads and each year more than 550 lives are lost in this way across the country. Unfortunately, it seems that the number of motorcyclists who are killed or who suffer serious personal injuries is going up, despite the fact that the overall number of motorcycling injuries is falling.
Statistics from Sussex Police show the rising rate of serious motorcycle accidents happening on a local level. Between January and September 2007, there were 14 fatal motorcycle accidents and 149 serious injury crashes in the county. These figures reveal that there has been close to a 20% increase in the number of motorcycle accidents resulting in serious personal injuries or death since 2006.
Sussex motorcycle accidents
Many of the motorcyclists who are injured in road accidents are leisure riders who come out for the fine summer weather. However, sunny days seem not to be connected to the high rate of motorcycle accidents in 2007, as it has been the wettest on record. In fact, Sussex Police believe that the motorbiking casualty figures would have been even higher had the weather been better.
Instead, the rising motorcycle accident rate is being linked with a dramatic jump in the number of bikers who are speeding in Sussex. Speed often proves to be an influential factor in motorcycle crashes, as going fast can magnify any slight mistake made by the rider, as well as increase the severity of personal injuries suffered in the accident.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: "Speed is the biggest problem. We have found motorcyclists have approached bends too quickly. They don't think about what they're doing. 40mph is fast if you are going round a 30mph bend."
However, speed is not the only factor which makes motorcycle accidents more likely. Police have revealed that careless and reckless riding and the consumption of alcohol are also leading causes of two-wheeled vehicle accidents, just as they are with car accidents.
