The Government Motorcycle Strategy and motorbike accident compensation

Government interest is high in the potential of motorbikes to be a major part of the UK's transport system, but they are aware of the possibility that an increase in their use could lead to an increase in motorbike accident compensation claims.

To this end, the Government Motorcycle Strategy was published in 2005. Its largest sections are on safety and motorcycle accident research, but other sections look at crime, parking, greenhouse emissions and even clothing.

Motorcycle accident trends
The statistics quoted on road traffic accidents involving motorcycles are sobering - while the rate of motorbike accidents is decreasing overall, the rate of fatal accidents is increasing. The figures given show that a biker is 25 times more likely to be killed than a car user, and 5 times more so than a cyclist. The most recently given figures seem to maintain this trend.

But - as well as encouraging road users to drive so as to prevent accidents - the Government is also registering its own duties, such as improving road surfaces and furniture. This means that, for example, manholes should be placed away from points where a motorbike may be cornering, to avoid causing skids, and bollards should not be placed where a fallen motorcyclist will be thrown into them.

Throughout the document, the stated aim has been "to facilitate motorcycling as a choice of travel within a safe and sustainable transport framework." This explains its emphasis on informing and encouraging, rather than making laws. It is also reflected in its approval by the British Motorcyclists Federation and the Motorcycle Action Group.
