It's a Long Way Down without motorcycle injuries
After completing their epic motorcycle journey the Long Way Round, from London to the US, best friends Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have completed another venture from the North of Scotland to South Africa without sustaining any serious motorcycle injuries.
The two friends straddled their BMW GS-1200 Adventurers and prepared to take on a journey through deserts, jungles and some of the world's most uneven terrain just as they had previously conquered the poor roads and fear-invoking borders of countries such as Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.
On their earlier adventure the boys sustained a number of motorcycle injuries. The most serious included McGregor having petrol sprayed in his eyes (twice) as he filled his bike's tank and Boorman badly straining his shoulder when he came off his bike in Siberia.
It was not until they got across the pond that the pair were involved in motorcycle accidents on two consecutive days. Just outside Calgary, Canada, McGregor was rear-ended by a young driver but his panniers took the brunt of the impact which, had they not, could have been very serious for the Star Wars actor. Then Boorman's bike was hit while stationary as a driver reversed into him at low speed, he also escaped serious motorcycle injury.
This time round the two actors, who have now become synonymous with biking, started their journey, the Long Way Down, in John O'Groats, Scotland, rode down through London, took the Eurostar to France and continued through Western Europe before reaching Tunisia where they began the African part of their trip.
While meeting tribes in Ethiopia, taking on the jungles of Uganda and getting up close and personal with native wildlife such as a herd of elephants, Ewan and Charley travelled a total of 15,000 miles, from the most northerly tip of Scotland to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly tip of Africa.
Faced with rugged terrain, they were in danger of sustaining all manner of motorcycle injuries on their Long Way Down but thankfully both McGregor and Boorman are each still in one piece and are in no doubt planning their next awe-inspiring adventure astride their motorcycles.
