Does age matter in a motorbike accident?

Statistics regarding motorbike accidents have been interpreted in many ways since 1998, when American researchers noticed a significant increasing trend in the number of crashes involving a motorcycle. One explanation that has been given is the increasing age of the riders.

Naturally, this has caused controversy, particularly as much research into road traffic accidents featuring cars has suggested that it is young drivers who are most at risk. Plenty of anecdotal evidence is available, too, that suggests that older riders are more aware of danger, and more likely to protect themselves against it.

However, there is an undeniable upward trend in the median age of the accident victims in the US research. Some dismiss this as being related to the fact that the median age of motorcycle riders overall is also increasing; others are not so sure.

In the UK, figures are less conclusive, but RoSPA is alert to the phenomenon they call the "Born Again Biker", who begins or returns to riding motorbikes at a later age. This, of course, draws a distinction between older bikers who have been riding for significant periods of time, and those who have less experience; the UK accident prevention organisation then further divides these riders into those who use their motorcycle as a main vehicle, and those who use it mainly for leisure.

What this suggests, then, is that the picture is too complex to pin blame for a motorcycle crash on age alone, and that any resulting compensation claim will need a skilled personal injury solicitor to deal with the legal aspects of the claim while fighting misinterpretations of complex statistics.
