Motorcycle accident compensation experts examine the Malaysian experience

It is an important fact that many bikers claim motorcycle accident compensation after being injured in collisions resulting from car drivers' inattention to their presence on the road.

This is scenario is as true to the UK as it is to the rest of world. However, the roads and motorways in most Asian countries have a much higher proportion of motorbike riders than in other parts of the world. Inevitably, this results in much greater numbers of motorcycling accident deaths and injuries in these countries.

Thailand, China, Vietnam and Malaysia are just four such countries. While other road safety issues like road design, road maintenance and motoring laws all play a part in the relatively high road accident casualty toll, an incompatibility between the needs, size and habits of car drivers and motorcyclists plays a significant part in the casualty rate.

It is in Malaysia that the most innovative step has been taken towards reducing casualty numbers. This has been done through the introduction of motorcycle-only lanes on motorways.

Motorcycle lanes in Malaysia
Just as in the UK, in Malaysia motorists are legally obliged to drive on the left-hand side of the road. This detail is relevant as in Malaysia motorbike lanes are situated at the far left-hand side of some expressways and motorways.

Although the obvious motivation behind the introduction of motorcycle lanes was to improve road safety for all, there have been a number of complaints about their design.

Narrowness
Foremost among these criticisms is the belief that they are simply too narrow for the needs of bikers. Typically half the width of a standard Malaysian carriageway, this makes overtaking an extremely risky business.

The slip roads leading off these motorcycling lanes onto the main carriageways are also considered by many to be much too narrow. There is also concern that some of these slip roads are so poorly designed that they necessitate a biker stopping before they can join the main body of traffic, meaning riders are often forced to stop, making them at high risk of suffering personal injury in a rear-end collision.

Crime risk
Many of these motorbike-specific lanes pass through narrow and poorly lit tunnels and bridges. This has led to them being targeted by thieves who first stop riders before robbing them and/or stealing their motorbikes. The Shah Alam Expressway and Federal Highway have both seen high incidences of this phenomenon.

In fact, the problem has become so bad in some places that many riders now only use the lanes during rush hours so as to avoid being targeted.

Poor Maintenance
Many motorcyclists have expressed considerable consternation at this problem. Poor drainage combined with a proliferation of potholes has led to many of the lanes becoming flooded even in dry conditions. At night, this problem is often compounded by poor illumination.

Optimism
Despite these problems, there have been encouraging signs that motorbike lanes could eventually be considered a useful road safety measure in countries right across the world.

As Malaysia is a country that is subject to extreme weather conditions, one feature of these lanes rest points for riders who need shelter from strong wind and rain has played a part in reducing the number of accidents caused by these factors.
