Rural roads and motorcycle accidents
Motorcycling is a passion shared by thousands of people across the UK and many enjoy going for a ride with their mates on beautiful summer evenings and at the weekends. In many instances, these trips take bikers into the countryside, where the roads are challenging and the scenery is stunning.
Unfortunately, just one misjudgement or sudden hazard can mean a motorcycle accident which puts an end to a biker's riding enjoyment for quite some time or forever. Research has revealed that it is on rural roads that motorcyclists are most likely to have a serious or fatal road traffic accident, and each year, thousands do. In fact, bikers have a three times higher risk of dying in a road accident in a rural area than on an urban route.
The dangers of biking in the countryside
The old tree-lined, twisty lanes and high stone walls may make for an attractive vista, but oak trees and solid walls don't look so attractive when you are flying towards them at sixty.
Whilst most dual carriageways and motorways are mostly bordered with crash barriers and have central reservations to minimise the effects of road accidents, the same certainly cannot be said for country roads. There is much less to stop oncoming traffic colliding with you and to stop you colliding with objects close to the road in the event of an accident.
Motorcyclists and car drivers have equally poor reputations for travelling too fast on country roads. Unfortunately, this can make for some extremely serious crashes and speed is often the factor which makes rural motorcycle accidents more serious than those which occur in urban areas.
The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) has been speaking out in support of the 2007 Think! campaign to reduce the number of rural road accidents which occur in the UK.
A spokesperson for MAG said: "I would advise all motorcyclists to heed the campaign's advice and drive within the speed limits and at an appropriate speed for the road and traffic conditions. Advanced training courses or assessments such as the excellent police run Bike Safe courses will give riders a better appreciation of hazards and improved riding skills."
