Employers encouraged to prevent motorcycle accidents

Motorcycling is a popular choice for getting to work because it allows riders to filter through queues of traffic in seconds and is a cheaper alternative to most cars. More and more people are buying scooters and low powered motorbikes to get to work, especially those who live and work in an urban environment.

However, along with the benefits of motorcycling comes the risk of having a motorcycle accident. The number of people who were killed in UK motorbike crashes went up in 2006 to 599, which is a 5% increase on the previous year. While many of these motorcycle accidents occurred while leisure riding, a substantial number also happened during riders' commutes to or from work.

Safer Motorcycling through Work
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has recently launched a scheme to encourage workplaces to promote motorcycle accident prevention among their employees. It is hoped that the Safer Motorcycling Through Work campaign will reduce the number of people being killed and seriously injured on the UK's roads.

Although companies which employ people to ride motorcycles as part of their job already have a duty to promote safety for their workers, those which have employees who ride to work or who ride as a leisure pursuit have no such duty. It is these companies that the motorcycle accident prevention scheme is targeting.

A spokesperson for RoSPA explained: "People are often extremely busy with various commitments away from work, so we hope employers will consider enabling their staff to develop these skills via the workplace.

"Providing such opportunities for staff who ride privately, as well as those who ride for work purposes, can also bring very real business benefits. The effects of an accident, whether it happened in or out of work, are costly, and helping staff stay safe therefore makes good business sense."
