Barely a day goes by without some news story about a motorcycle accident in which the rider has suffered serious personal injuries. More often than not, these are head injuries, the most common type of serious motorcycling injury. Damage to the head causes 80% of motorcycling fatalities and 70% of serious injuries, as well as a significant proportion of minor injuries.
These statistics show it to be absolutely vital that motorcyclists have the best possible head protection. There are hundreds of different helmet models available on the market, with a wide range of designs to suit every rider. Some like to wear a full-face helmet, whilst others favour open-faced helmets, and the range available incorporates these preferences.
Helmet ratings
In the past, motorcyclists have just chosen their helmets on the basis of what they perceive to be its safety features, as well as looks and style. However, this somewhat haphazard method of choosing a helmet may mean that bikers don't get a level of protection that effectively minimises the risk of head injuries in the event of a road accident.
Fortunately, the Road Safety Minister Stephen Ladyman has revealed that a standardised system of safety ratings is going to be introduced in early 2008. It will work in a similar fashion to the Euro NCAP safety testing of cars, giving each model a star rating indicating the amount of head injury protection provided. This makes selecting a helmet with first class safety credentials a much easier task for motorcyclists.
However, it is expected that the star rating system will have an additional benefit of improving the overall safety of helmets. Manufacturers recognise that models that score badly in the rating system will not sell, meaning that they will work harder to make their helmets safer.
The Road Safety Minister commented, "This new system will transform the way you buy helmets. Any biker would be mad to buy a helmet with a low safety value. We've done our research and we believe that we can save 50 bikers' lives a year if they were to wear helmets of a higher safety standard."
