Are BMW planning an 'uncrashable' bike to reduce motorcycle accident claims?

It appears that BMW is designing an 'uncrashable' bike, if the drawings that have been leaked on to the internet are to be trusted. This is to be welcomed if it can help riders avoid making a motorcycle accident claim due to personal injury.

The motorbike's 'uncrashable' tag results from its apparent ability to flex its frame, under computerised control, in response to unusual positions. If the on-board computer registers a position in the bike that precedes a motorbike accident or skid, small pivots and pneumatic pistons will move the wheels to prevent it.

At the time of writing, BMW has not confirmed the rumoured avoidance system. However, if the system does move to the market it could help to reduce the number of single-vehicle motorcycle crashes significantly. Even this, though, could do little to reduce the potential for personal injury in collisions.

Some voices have been raised suggesting that mechanisms such as this would reduce the enjoyment of riding a motorcycle. Until these plans leave the drawing board, though, this is simply speculative.
