Motorcycle accident claims and the BikeSafe campaign

The death and injury rates for Scottish motorcyclists have decreased dramatically over the past 30 years and this has had an inevitable positive impact on the number of motorcycle accident claims being made.

However, government, police and motorcycling groups all know that there is still work to be done. After all, motorbikes still account for around only 2% of registered vehicles in Scotland yet still make up for a disproportionate number of deaths on Scottish roads.

Many of the improvements can be attributed to initiatives such as the one launched in the year 2000, called BikeSafe Scotland.

At the time, BikeSafe was seen as major innovation in tackling the causes of rider death and injury. This was because it was the first campaign of its kind to cohere the expertise of police, motorbike dealers and riders themselves in a single drive of "education, encouragement and enforcement".

The fact that so many deaths and injuries occur as a result of riders rounding bends at excessive speeds represented one of the campaigns most pressing targets.

Cleverly, the minds behind the campaign took a radical and proactive approach to the problem by recruiting the support and knowledge of both police and leading lights from the world of motorbike racing. All eight regional Scottish police forces came on board, as did such superbike champions as Brian Morrison, Jim Moodie and Niall Mckenzie.

Police riders are widely recognised as being among the best in UK. With this in mind, BikeSafe launched a landmark program that allowed civilian riders to participate in refinement lessons with the prestigious Scottish Police College. These lessons gave them opportunities to receive advanced training in vital road skills such as braking, cornering and observation.

With growing numbers of young and "born again" bikers taking to the road a pressing cause for concern, the decision of police to work in conjunction with dealerships in order to better educate new riders was also a welcome move.

While motorcycling deaths and injuries are still a serious issue and motorcycle accident claims are still made, the fact that BikeSafe has put so many important rider safety issues in the public domain has doubtless had a positive impact in controlling the scale of the motorcycling problems faced by Scotland.
