Cutting the number of fatal motorcycle accident claims
At YouClaim, we help people who have been hurt in road crashes make successful motorcycle accident claims against those who cause the collisions. Unfortunately for the biker population, we handle many compensation claims for serious personal injuries that have been caused by other motorists' mistakes.
While many of these personal injury claims are made by the motorcyclist themselves, in some situations they may be too badly injured to do so and in the worst circumstances, may have passed away as a result of their motorcycling injuries. In these situations, we can assist families in claiming compensation on behalf of the person who was involved in the motorcycle accident.
Bike accidents in Northern Ireland
Sadly, the number of families being left in this situation has been rising in recent years. In Northern Ireland, there has been close to a doubling in the fatal motorcycle accident rate in 2007, with statistics from the end of September showing that 25 motorcyclists lost their lives in road traffic accidents. One of those killed was a pillion passenger.
Whilst it is not known how many of these motorcycle accidents were caused by biker error and how many were the fault of another road user, the Environment Minister for NI believes that improving rider skills is key to cutting this crash rate. By doing so, bikers will be better prepared to anticipate and successfully handle dangerous situations on the roads, whether they are caused through their own doing or someone else's.
As a result, motorcyclists in Northern Ireland are now facing the prospect of toughened training to ensure a higher level of riding skill before they are granted a licence. A new manoeuvres test is planned, which test a rider's ability to avoid obstacles, emergency brake and slalom at various speeds.
If the scheme is successful, fewer riders in Northern Ireland will be involved in accidents on the roads, this should have the added benefit of reducing the numbers of motorcycle accident claims. A similar test is planned for England, Wales and Scotland and will come into effect six months after the one in Northern Ireland, hopefully leading to a reduction in motorcycle casualties across the whole of the United Kingdom.
