Motorbike accidents and the risk in EU countries

A 2008 statistical review of motorbike accident deaths and injuries in European Union countries released by the Transport Research Centre in Brno sheds some interesting light on the challenges facing governments and road safety organisations across the EU.

The report brought bad news for Hungary, Latvia and Slovenia, three of the four countries where there are 200 deaths for every one billion kilometres a rider travels.

For the fourth of these countries, the Czech Republic, the report was particularly worrying, given the efforts that have been made to curb motorbike accident deaths there. It was found that, at 4%, the yearly rise in motorcycle crash deaths in the Czech Republic is the second highest of all EU countries, second only to Latvia, which has witnessed a 10% increase.

A Czech spokesperson confirmed this, commenting, "The Czech Republic is the second worst country in terms of the average year-to-year increase of a number of bikers killed."

However, the report did not bring good news for the UK either, with statistics confirming that the UK is one of the few EU countries to witness a rise in the accident risk per billion kilometres travelled. The same Transport Research Centre spokesperson comments, "A few countries - the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary and Great Britain - exhibit an increase of this risk. The Czech Republic is the worst of allof thesecountries."

In contrast, by far and away the safest place for bikers remains Scandinavia. Denmark, Norway and Finland were all recorded as having "acceptable" risk levels of around 35 deaths per billion kilometers travelled.

Overall, the statistics show that 6,200 bikers died in road accidents in the EU during 2006, with the death risk 18 times higher for riders than it is for other road users.
