Riders are not seen by vehicle drivers in motorcycle accidents
Studies show that motorcycle accidents tend to be caused mostly by other vehicle drivers who fail to see the motorbike often leading to personal injury claims against the offending driver.
But that doesn't mean motorcyclists make no mistakes that lead to such crashes. If you are a rider, here are the three key problems to watch out for:
Crashes at road junctions
If the driver admits he didn't see you, that's fine for a motorcycle accident claim - but that still won't help you get back the limb that you had to have amputated or solve the brain damage.
Better to not be hurt at all.
Best to follow this advice: be prepared that a car, van, lorry or bus driver may pull out in front of you. Consider the speed you are approaching the junction, keep a measured eye on that driver. He may not have seen you.
Crashes during overtaking
A rider must judge speed and distance effectively and be aware how the bike accelerates and brakes.
Follow some common sense guidance:
Don't overtake where it's prohibited such as on double white lines, and also not near to pedestrian crossings, hills or road dips, bends, lay-bys, junctions.
Be aware that drivers you attempt to overtake may not slow down to let you in. In fact, knowing how some people drive, they may speed up to annoy you, or worryingly, put your life in danger.
While overtaking, watch out for vehicles coming towards you at high speed
Motorcycling slowly past traffic jams, slow-moving traffic and stationary vehicles can be hazardous. Many drivers will be unaware that you are there, sometimes driving across your planned path.
Plan overtaking in advance - a rushed decision could lead to death or serious injury.
Losing control
This can be caused by road surface conditions or shunts where cars or other vehicles maybe too close behind you, or you are riding too close.
It is important to be able to stop in the distance that is clear.
Try reciting the following rhyme at a measured pace as vehicles pass a marker in the road:
"Only a fool breaks the two-second rule"
By the time you reach the marker, you should have finished saying "rule" to know you're at a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
