Injuries from motorcycle accidents can include BTD

One of the more unusual results of a motorcycle accident is bilateral testicular dislocation (BTD). It is an uncommon condition which can occur when a motorcycle crash drives the male rider's lower abdomen into the fuel tank, forcing the testes out of place and into the abdomen.

Recent scientific papers from China and Japan have recorded the phenomenon, first reported in the 1800s as a result of men being run over by cartwheels, in bikers who have been involved in collisions. They also noted that the condition is easily missed unless the doctor knows that this is something to look out for, or unless the rider mentions it as a possibility.

This can happen without the urine showing blood, without the pelvis being broken, and - if the area is swollen with other injuries - without noticeable swelling. It is for these reasons that this is a condition that needs to be looked for on an active basis. However, the personal injury received by the biker need not be highly serious to result in BTD.

To a biker who has just been involved in a crash, especially one that has led to whiplash, broken bones or further obvious personal injury, the dislocation may well seem to be the last of his worries. However, the consequences of the condition can range from pain to gangrene, and include infertility, making this a potential injury well worth bearing in mind.
