Motorbike accidents claim lives, so should we ban motorcycles?

Recognition of the fact that motorbike accidents claim a disproportionate number of lives comes in many forms. Awareness campaigns, road safety drives and calls for improved motorcycling safety technology are just a few of these.

Yet in 2008 a new and radical approach was called for by an eminent European road safety expert. Rune Elvik, research chief with the Norwegian Institute of European Economics, voiced his concern that the presence of motorcycles on roads would always be incompatible with that of cars, and suggested that the only sensible option was to ban them altogether.

His philosophy is founded on the principles of "Vision Zero", a road safety strategy that aims to eliminate all road deaths, and has so far been adopted by countries as diverse as Sweden, Australia and Norway.

Elivik made it clear that if European countries are to match words with action, they should consider banning motorbikes from their roads. He said, "If they are serious about these lofty road safety ambitions that have been announced then I think such a discussion is needed. Motorcycling would definitely not be allowed."

However, many motorcycling lobbyists believe that in focusing only on the negatives, the Norwegian is missing the point.

Some have countered that Elvik's proposal lacks sophistication, arguing that all car accident deaths and injuries could be avoided too if only cars were banned. It is certainly a scenario that would see all the UK's road accident compensation solicitors out of a job.

Craig Carey-Clinch, a spokesperson with the Motorcycle Industry Association, comments on Elvik's views, "He clearly does not understand the contribution motorcycling makes to transport, easing congestion and reducing CO2 emissions. He really needs to get a sense of perspective."
