Advanced rider training and avoiding a motorcycle accident

Once you’ve passed your Compulsory Basic Training CBT, Theory test and Direct Access Scheme you may feel that you’d benefit from an advanced rider training course. These courses are designed to improve riders’ skills and hone their ability.

They can help you to get out of tricky situations on the road and may help you avoid a potential motorcycle accident. They will make you a safer rider all round. Many courses can be tailored to your individual needs and will make you feel more confident on the roads.

Being a good rider means that you are always learning and willing to take on board changes in the levels of traffic, changes in riding requirements and changes to machines. There are a variety of courses that you can take but it is a good idea to do your research to find out which is most suitable for you.

You can find the advanced rider training school nearest to you by looking in the Yellow Pages or by doing a search on the internet. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) runs a range of courses, each course instructor being highly trained Police Advanced Certificate holders. Go to www.rospa.org.uk for more information.

According to RoSPA the benefits of taking an advanced rider course are:

  • lowering your insurance premiums
  • reduced levels of stress
  • improved fuel consumption
  • less wear and tear on your bike
