With official figures revealing one in 50 hospital treatments are as a result of complications with earlier care, it is important to be aware of the role of the clinical negligence solicitor in gaining recompense for affected patients and their families.
The NHS Information Centre, which collects data from hospitals in England, published statistics in October 2009 stating that in the previous year two per cent of all patient stays in hospital related to incidents such as reactions to drugs, unexpected problems, and mistakes or errors with medication and surgery which meant the patient required further treatment.
Complications have become steadily more frequent, rising from one in every 57 people treated in 2006/7 to one in every 53 in 2007/8 to one in 50 in 2008/9. The reason for this is not clear and the incidents are not only as a result of medical negligence.
Almost one in three of the complications related to drugs and will include cases where the patient had an unexpected reaction needing treatment or received the wrong dose meaning they suffered side effects.
Foreign objects were left in patients in 159 instances and there were nearly 1,000 cases where there were problems with anaesthesia or gases delivery causing problems.
A Department of Health spokesman said, "Patient safety is a top priority for the NHS and the vast majority of NHS patients experience good quality, safe and effective care. Reasons are often unpredictable. Many complications are not the result of poor quality care."
Although relatively few patients suffer complications to their care as a result of poor or negligent treatment by health service professionals, everyone is entitled to the best possible treatment and if you, or a loved one, feel you have suffered through a surgical error, misdiagnosis or similar incident, you may be eligible to make a clinical negligence compensation claim.
