Mobile phones, cancers and the asbestos compensation analogy

Concerns are mounting that the catastrophic legacy of disease and illness left by the widespread use of asbestos materials could one day be dwarfed by a pandemic of mobile phone-related cancers. There are also speculations that such a scenario could have unprecedented consequences in the field of litigation too, with the possibility that payouts by mobile phone companies could one day significantly outstrip the billions of pounds of asbestos compensation paid out in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

These concerns follow a study by the leading neurosurgeon and cancer specialist Dr Vini Khurana, who has reached the conclusion that mobile phone use has the potential to lead to more fatalities than even asbestos exposure or cigarette smoking.

According to Dr Khurana, people who use mobile telephones for 10 or more years may be at twice the risk of developing brain cancers than the rest of the population. Since the incubation period for these cancers is generally around a decade, his findings could discount previous short-term use studies.

He believes that the time for action is now, commenting, "Unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps to openly acknowledge and intervene in this situation, even while waiting for definitive confirmation by large and well-constructed multi-centre studies worldwide, malignant brain tumour incidence and its associated death rate will be observed globally to rise within a decade from now, by which time it may be far too late to meaningfully intervene, especially for those who are currently children and young adults."

He added, "It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking."

Although the Mobile Phone Operators Association discount the study as "a selective discussion of scientific literature by one individual", Dr Khurana believes that a link between mobile phone use and certain brain tumours will be "definitively proven" within the next ten years. And if this does indeed prove to be the case, it may well be that the scales of asbestos-related illness and asbestos compensation we have witnessed over the past twenty to thirty years could soon be dwarfed by a new and tragic pandemic.
