Metacarpophalangeal articulation compensation claims with YouClaim

Metacarpophalangeal articulation compensation is awarded in the case of injury to the ligaments which join the thumb to the base of the hand.

The injury can occur in several settings, from a skiing accident to a workplace accident, and is typically the result of excessive force being exerted on the thumb, causing it to bend back (called valgus force), away from the hand. In workplace settings it is also common for the injury to manifest chronically as a result of repetitive strain that has resulted in cumulative and long-lasting damage.

Traditionally, the injury has been referred to as "gamekeeper's thumb". This is because the injury was first observed in Scottish gamekeepers who had sustained the injury as a result of repeatedly breaking the necks of animals in a motion that placed excessive valgus force on the abducted metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint

In skiing, the injury tends to be caused by skiers falling while still holding onto a pole, resulting in hyperextension of the proximal phalanx of the thumb. Since suffering a fall while holding an object is a common cause of the injury, the injury has also been observed in the players of racquet sports.

Studies have shown that approximately 50% of MCP injuries are caused by falling onto an outstretched hand, often as a result of a slip, trip or fall in a workplace setting. Sports-related accidents account for the majority of other MCP injuries.

Symptoms of MCP injury
The symptoms of an MCP injury are a weakened ability to grasp and pinch, difficulty holding objects, as well as pain and swelling around the thumb.

Treatment
In most cases, the injury can be treated by giving it time to heal, sometimes by immobilising the joint. However, in severe cases, surgery may be required. In moderate to severe cases, if it can be found that another party is responsible for the injury, metacarpophalangeal articulation compensation may be payable.
