Mesothelioma, the Dutch vaccine study

2010 was an important year in the history of mesothelioma research. This is because Researchers at Erasmus Medical Center in The Netherlands made important breakthroughs in their search for a vaccine for the illness.

Previously, the researchers had used laboratory mice to test the efficacy of dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy in provoking the body's immune system to eliminate the cancerous cells of tumours.

However, before 2010 nothing was known about the usefulness of DC therapy on human subjects with the disease.

As such, the Dutch-based scientists recruited 10 subjects, all of whom had been recently diagnosed with "malignant pleural' mesothelioma" and received some chemotherapy treatment.

Dentritic cells were taken from each of the subjects' blood, it was then exposed to proteins from the subjects' cancers and another protein called keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH). Finally, these "activated" dentritic cells were then reinjected into the patients to test for an autoimmune response.

Promisingly, all of the patients involved tested positive for the relevant antibodies, with the tumours of three patients, although perhaps coincidentally, actually shrinking.

Dr Jodie Moffat, health information manager at Cancer Research UK, said that the study "involved just ten people, and so much more research and testing is needed before we'll know if this will be a viable and effective treatment for mesothelioma in the future. Mesothelioma can be very difficult to treat, so finding new treatments to help beat the disease is crucial."

However, the Dutch-based researchers were optimistic about the results, saying they hoped "that by further development of our method it will be possible to increase survival in patients with mesothelioma and eventually vaccinate persons who have been in contact with asbestos to prevent them from getting asbestos-related diseases."

Claim compensation for an asbestos-related illness
The majority of mesothelioma cases are caused by exposure to asbestos in the workplace.

Tragically, there is still no cure for the cancer; it is considered to be a terminal illness.

If you or a close family member has suffered this form of cancer and believe it was caused by occupational exposure, you may be entitled to make claim for compensation.

We have one of the UK's leading asbestos claim solicitor panels and offer our services to claimants on a completely charge-free basis. This means that, win or lose, all our clients are protected from every possible cost, fee and disbursement.

Whether you are suffering from the pleural or peritoneal form of the disease, worked as lagger, boilermaker, carpenter, builder, joiner, plumber or electrician, we can help you decide whether it would be in your interests to proceed with a no win, no fee claim for damages.

To consult an advisor about what steps you should take next, echat, complete an online claim form or call us, on 0800 10 757 95.
