Women and mesothelioma

Most cases of mesothelioma are suffered by men as, traditionally, the industry sectors where the risk of asbestos exposure was the highest were engineering, construction and the motoring industry.

However, many women were affected by washing the work clothes of their husbands, sons etc and they have indirectly suffered work-related industrial illness because employers did not highlight the dangers associated with asbestos fibres and dust being brought into the home.

Gradually, it has been recognised that women who contracted mesothelioma are entitled to asbestos compensation in the same way that men had been compensated for many years, and employers who had not done enough to protect workers their families were brought to book in the courts.

In 2010, researchers from the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston Massachusetts published research into the role of gender in the survival rates of mesothelioma patients and found that women were good candidates for aggressive treatments, such as surgery.

The study revealed that generally women develop mesothelioma, cancer of the lungs caused by inhalation of asbestos fibres, at an earlier age than men – patients can take several decades to develop the disease after initial exposure – but they are likely to live longer after surgical intervention.

The cohort of 700 patients, all who underwent surgery between 1987 and 2008, contained 145 women. It was found that when undergoing extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) – a radical and highly invasive surgery which resections a large amount of tissue – women "demonstrated a survival advantage".

Unfortunately, though survival times may be enhanced for women having EPP, mesothelioma is almost always fatal.

Making a claim for mesothelioma compensation whatever your gender
YouClaim can help male and female sufferers of mesothelioma make a claim for 100% compensation where they have been exposed to asbestos as a result of employer negligence.

Very few people contract asbestos diseases from sources in a domestic setting and unless they have disturbed asbestos themselves when renovating there is usually a cause related to employment or contractors who have not managed the disturbance or disposal of asbestos correctly.

If you have received a mesothelioma diagnosis, there will be much to contemplate, but it is important that sufferers seek financial redress for their condition. A damages award could see the financial welfare of your family secured or provide a better level of care during your treatment.
