Mesothelioma is first slow and insidious then swift and merciless. Despite this, some patients do survive the cancer longer than others; however, until recently it has not been possible to predict patient survival outcomes with any accuracy.
On May 6 2009 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) reported that scientists have devised a test that can predict which patients have the highest chance of surviving longest this deadly asbestos-related disease.
Our panel of specialist asbestos claim solicitors has many years' experience representing this type of litigation and have rightfully earned a reputation for sensitivity and success.
This is done by comparing the quotient of four different genes common in survivors of mesothelioma against those newly diagnosed with the disease.
The test is a marked improvement on previous methods to establish prognosis. Not only is it less invasive than the previous surgical method, it is also more accurate.
The technique, which has been adopted from the work done by breast cancer researchers, demonstrated its effectiveness in a predictive analysis of 120 patients. These were gene tested and then divided into two groups: those with a low expected survival time and those with a longer expected survival time. On average, those in the first group survived 9.5 months and those in the latter group survived 16.8 months.
It is thought that the gene test will have other uses too. Those with better prognoses are likely to be better candidates for surgery, while those with a shorter predicted survival time are more likely to benefit from alternative treatment options.
