For most people the diagnosis of mesothelioma is a life changing event. The most likely cause of the disease will have been exposure to asbestos fibres, often over twenty years beforehand. Treatment for the asbestos-related disease is commonly aggressive and frequently involves chemotherapy, radiotherapy and/or extra-pleural pneumonectomy (lung removal).
When 68 year-old Tom Kaisersatt, a keen marathon runner from San Jose, California, was told in June 2008 that he had pleural mesothelioma he was determined to complete the Silicon Valley Marathon in four months time.
The underlying cause of his mesothelioma is, as of yet, undisclosed, but it is almost certain that at some point in his life he will have been exposed to asbestos.
Kaisersatt is a veteran runner who has completed over 150 marathons and is a founder member of San Jose Fit (SJF; a club that helps train people to complete long distance running and walking events). And when the diagnosis was given he could find no reason to stop him from entering the autumn marathon even though he would be well into his four rounds of chemotherapy.
He knew that the treatment would be severely debilitating, but with the blessing of the race organisers, he ran/walked over 21 miles of the course in one- and two-mile sections in the five weeks leading up to race-day. It was agreed that on October 26th he would complete the final five miles of the course.
In the ten years that he had been involved with SJF he had helped thousands of would-be runners undertake their first ever long distance race and testimonials of gratitude were more than abundant on the day of the Silicon Valley race. Members of SJF donned bright yellow T-shirts emblazoned with the words, "Team Tom" and yellow balloons bobbed their way around the course attached to the wrists of San Jose "Fitters" as they like to be known.
As he crossed the line, surrounded by a yellow phalanx of "fitters", an emotional cry went up:
"TEAM TOM! TEAM TOM!"
When asked how the finish line welcome made him feel, the tall silver haired man looked down, "I can't comment sufficiently. It's overwhelming."
Only days after the race, Kaisersatt was due to undergo his fourth (and hopefully final) bout of chemotherapy. His doctors would then decide whether an extra-pleural pneumonectomy would be required. The procedure often necessitates the removal of part of the diaphragm and would probably require radiation treatment as part of the post-surgical protocol.
When asked about his prognosis, he replied, "A lot of people get along with just one lung, although that will probably increase my marathon time next year."
