Mesothelioma and mortality rates across the UK

Mesothelioma is the most deadly of all asbestos-related illnesses. Once diagnosed, its progress can be swift and merciless. The majority of those in the UK who develop the illness will do so because of exposure in the workplace, so claiming workplace compensation, even if it is just to provide a secure future for their families, may be considered essential.

The 2008 Health and Safety Executive mesothelioma mortality report uses statistics to help give us an understanding of the personal devastation wrought by the asbestos cancer. It shows us that the toll taken by the illness continues to grow.

Detailing deaths between 1985 and 2004, the report reveals that although mortality rates in older members of the population remain high, there appears to have been some recent trailing off in the rates of recorded cases among people under the age of 65.

Most probably this is because widespread asbestos exposure was effectively phased out from the 1970s onwards, meaning that most cases relate to people who were exposed before or around this time.

Although internal UK migration makes it difficult to identify the precise causal location of each death, it is still observed that the areas of the UK that used to be centres for asbestos reliant industries such as shipbuilding and the rail manufacture industry are the ones with the highest numbers of recorded deaths. Naturally, this includes such areas as Tyne and Wear, the North East, North West, the South East, Yorkshire, Scotland, London and Greater Manchester.

It is worth noting that female mortality rates, which account for a minority of deaths from this illness, fairly reflect the geographical breakdown of male asbestos cancer deaths.
