Asbestos claims and mesothelioma compensation for victims of asbestosis

Having been exposed to asbestos 15 to 25 years ago might mean that you have mesothelioma and could therefore claim mesothelioma compensation.

The symptoms of mesothelioma present themselves differently from person to person and as such mesothelioma is at times hard to spot.

Causing further problems for doctors attempting to diagnose a patient is the fact that there are three different types of mesothelioma, each with their varying set of symptoms, which people will experience in different ways.

Pleural mesothelioma
The name comes from the word pleura which is the lining of the lungs, and this is where Pleural mesothelioma manifests itself.

This is the most common type of mesothelioma and its symptoms are as follows:

  • A persistent cough

  • Shortness of breath without over exertion

  • Chest pains

  • Wheezing

Chest X-rays should show fluid in the lungs, and sometimes the sufferer can also be prone to blood clots.

Peritoneal mesothelioma
The name comes from the word peritoneum which is the lining of the abdomen, where this type of mesothelioma presents itself.

Sufferers of Peritoneal mesothelioma might experience the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain and swelling

  • A developing abdominal mass

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • A change in bowel functions

The longer the sufferer lives with Peritoneal mesothelioma, the more likely they are to experience night-sweats, anaemia (a decreased number of red blood-cells), fevers, and sometimes bowel obstruction.

Pericardial mesothelioma
The name comes from the word pericardium, the membrane which surrounds the heart. This is the least common type of mesothelioma only affecting around 5% of all sufferers.

The symptoms of Pericardial mesothelioma are:

  • Persistent chest pain

  • A shortness of breath even at rest

  • Heart palpitations or irregular breathing

  • Tiredness

The importance of quick diagnosis
As has already been said, identifying the symptoms of the different types of mesothelioma in different people is difficult.

Early symptoms are easily misdiagnosed as breathing problems caused by asthma or pneumonia.

For this reason it is very important that if a person feels they are suffering from any of these symptoms, and may have worked with or around asbestos earlier in their lives, they should go to see a doctor.

It is also important to tell the doctor that you may have been exposed to asbestos, since this could help the doctor diagnose you effectively.

The quicker the diagnosis the more likely it is that the sufferer will be able to receive treatment which could improve their quality of life, and might even lengthen it.
