In the UK, the ill effects of asbestos are almost unchallenged. Claims for mesothelioma compensation, or other asbestos-related diseases, are almost always settled in favour of the claimant, and the material is subject to strict controls wherever it is found.
Yet in Canada, where there remains an active asbestos industry, a strong pro-asbestos voice is heard in the Chrysotile Institute. This organisation claims that chrysotile, one of the forms of asbestos, is less dangerous than other forms, and is safe if used appropriately, such as in cement.
Their reasoning includes a belief that chrysotile's softer structure has a lower biopersistence - meaning that it stays in the lungs for less time - than other forms of asbestos, and that this means there is a lower chance of damage to the lungs.
This is understandably controversial. Voices raised against the Chrysotile Institute include Building and Wood Workers International, a federation of trade unions, and MiningWatch Canada. Their refutations of the Institute's opinions include the argument that the fibres are not expelled but simply broken up until they become invisible, and scientific evidence that shows effects that can lead to a mesothelioma compensation claim can be immediate.
Asbestos apologist movements in the UK
The continued presence of the Chrysotile Institute in Canada may seem to have little effect on the UK, but it is possible to find organisations within the UK that have similar opinions to the Chrysotile Institute, and sometimes reference each other in their press releases.
One such, despite a damning report from the BBC, continues to run a website claiming that there are "rarely instances when asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in domestic properties pose measurable risks to health". A Telegraph journalist supports this position vocally.
Judging by the balance of scientific opinion, it is unlikely that the government's position will change regarding the use and sale of asbestos. However, any movement that plays down the danger of asbestos fibres may cause complacency, which may lead to exposure, which may lead to pleural plaques, asbestosis, or mesothelioma.
Making a mesothelioma compensation claim
Even the Chrysotile Institute agrees that mesothelioma is a disease caused by asbestos exposure. If you have contracted this disease, it is highly likely that you have done so through work, and would therefore be eligible to claim for mesothelioma compensation from your employers, even if they have now gone out of business.
