Over the years, hundreds, if not thousands, of people in the UK have sought mesothelioma compensation after being diagnosed with the industrial disease. Along with asbestosis and emphysema, mesothelioma is one of the three main illnesses caused by the intake of asbestos fibres to the lungs.
One of the most notable things about most mesothelioma compensation claims is the gap between when the asbestos was breathed in and when the illness was diagnosed. This is generally a period of between thirty and fifty years, although both longer and shorter incubation periods have been observed.
Mesothelioma trends
People have been suffering from asbestos-related diseases for many, many years. Its ability to withstand heat has long been admired but its use as a building material grew particularly quickly in the UK from the late 19th century through to the 1980s, when many forms of it were banned altogether.
However, the time delay between exposure to asbestos and the development of mesothelioma means that we are seeing an increasing incidence of people being diagnosed with the disease and having to claim mesothelioma compensation. Research conducted by Peto in 1995 looks into the trend of incidence of this asbestos-related disease.
Using data from death certificates which cited mesothelioma as the cause of death, Peto observes that the number of workers dying from the disease rose through the 1970s and 1980s, and continues the same upward trend, with men born between 1943 and 1948 having the greatest risk. He believes that men born in this time period will make up the bulk of the mesothelioma-related deaths until the trend peaks in 2020.
He predicts: "After 2020, however, the prediction will rapidly be dominated by men born after 1958. If their risk is negligible, the epidemic will peak at about 2,700 deaths per year and will disappear rapidly after 2020. If their lifetime risk is 50% of the 1943-1948 maximum, the annual total will peak at 3,300 deaths around 2020 and then fall to about 2,300 deaths per year."
However, it has been suggested that Peto's predictions may be somewhat off target because his initial data has been updated, with the number of mesothelioma deaths between 1968 and 1991 being raised by 10%. Another researcher, Hutchings, suggests that the effect of this may be to bring the peak forward, so by 2020 we should be well into a downward trend.
