For a long time it was known that asbestos causes mesothelioma after all, this link is necessary for the making of a mesothelioma compensation claim - but for over 40 years very little was known about how it caused the cancer.
However, in 2010, Drs. Haining Yang and Michele Carbone at the University of Hawaii Cancer Research Center together with researchers from University of Chicago, New York University, University of Pittsburgh, the Imperial College in London and San Raffaele University of Milano managed to discover exactly how the deadly mineral causes the industrial cancer to occur.
According to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, U.S.A. (June 30, 2010), the scientists discovered that asbestos induces cells to undergo a process called "programmed necrosis", which then causes the body to release a protein called high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1).
HMGB1 then acts as an inflammatory agent which stimulates the release of mutagens; once this mutagenic process is underway, it forms tumours on the mesothelium.
These findings were backed up by higher than average levels of the HMGB1 protein being recorded in the serum of patients exposed to asbestos.
Interestingly, the scientists believe that by interfering with the processes set in chain by HMGB1, they may be able to reduce the chances of mesothelioma occurring in those who have been exposed to asbestos.
They also postulate that by taking anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, it may be possible to prevent the cancer from ever occurring.
One of the researchers commented, "I am very hopeful about this discovery. Now that we know that the chronic inflammation caused by asbestos drives tumour growth, we can test different medicines that can suppress inflammation. Aspirin was shown to decrease the incidence of colon cancer; a tumour that, like mesothelioma, is associated with chronic inflammation."
