Mesothelioma treatment options and claiming compensation after asbestos exposure

People who become chronically ill after being exposed to asbestos may find they are able to make a claim for mesothelioma compensation if another party, such as an employer, is found to have been negligent in their duty of care.

Treatment for mesothelioma can be extremely invasive and can see a person needing long term care and therapies which could prove costly - a mesothelioma compensation payment could help with therapy costs and help to ease the financial burden if the household has lost an income as a result of the asbestos disease.

Research into mesothelioma treatment options
For many victims of mesothelioma, their treatment will involve a triple therapy option comprising surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The surgery most commonly involves pneumonectomy (EPP), an aggressive form of surgery to remove as much of the cancerous tissue as possible to prevent further spread of the condition.

However, in 2009, doctors from the Dr. Horst Schmidt Kliniken in Wiesbaden, Germany, reported on their investigation into the efficacy of performing radical pleurectomy (RP) as part of triple therapy to see if survival rates and post surgical outcome was better than with the more usual EPP method of treatment.

EPP - removes the lung, the lining of the lung and heart, and the diaphragm. It can only be performed on early stage mesothelioma patients who are otherwise healthy, however, once immediate chemotherapy and radiation treatment has taken place patients are usually unable to tolerate further therapy if the cancer reoccurs.

RP - is a much less invasive surgical procedure which removes the lung pleura, stripping away the lining affected by asbestos fibres so that the lung can expand and fill the pleural cavity. Various studies have shown that the use of RP in triple therapy treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma shows good morbidity, mortality and survival rates than where EPP is the surgical intervention method.

In the German study, 33 mesothelioma patients underwent RP surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Overall the average survival rate of the cohort was 30 months.

One of the researching surgeons said, "Our survival rates are comparable to survival rates after EPP, even a little better.

"Even in [the] event of recurrence, our patients are able to tolerate additional therapy, which prolongs life. Patients after EPP mostly are not able to tolerate any additional therapy."

At the time, the lead researcher hoped to carry out further investigation into the patient individualisation of this mesothelioma treatment by looking at the complex biology of the cancer so that physicians would be able to choose the right chemotherapy drug for each patient.
