Despite all forms of asbestos being barred from new applications in the UK since 1999, and banned or restricted in more than 50 countries worldwide, white asbestos still continues to be used in China, India, Russia and Brazil. Mesothelioma compensation therefore continues to be sought as people continue to be exposed to the deadly asbestos dust.
In 2010, the BBC helped raise awareness of the continuing battle to ban all forms of asbestos worldwide. Focused on the Jeffrey asbestos mine in Quebec, BBC journalists looked at the use of white asbestos or chrysotile which is the only form still used commercially.
The Canadian mine is visited daily by tourists who enjoy the spectacular sight of the bright blue coloured rock from a specially constructed observation deck above the quarry. The chrysotile from the mine is shipped all around the world to be used as a cheap and effective building material.
In an interview with the BBC, Dr Vincent Cogliano of the World Health Organisation's International Agency for Research on Cancer said, "Any exposure is going to prolong the asbestos epidemic continued export and continued use of chrysotile will increase the incidence of lung cancer and mesothelioma for many decades to come."
While medical research has determined white asbestos dust to be a cause of mesothelioma, the asbestos industry denies the link and argues that those with asbestos-related diseases are suffering the effects of contact with brown and blue forms of the rock. They also argue that white asbestos is perfectly safe provided that it is handled correctly.
However, a public health professor at Rotterdam's Erasmus Medical Centre said that after reviewing epidemiological studies commissioned by the Dutch government, he was convinced that white asbestos was "much more dangerous than previously thought."
In a statement he said, "Chrysotile [white asbestos] is as dangerous as crocidolite [blue asbestos] for contracting lung cancer and is also linked to mesothelioma. I don't think there is a safe way of working with asbestos, so I would support a global ban."
If you have been affected by mesothelioma due to the negligence of your employers, you could make a compensation claim for the suffering that you have endured.
