Asbestos materials should only be removed safely

Asbestos materials can be often found in houses that were built before 1999. Although the majority of people will not become affected by asbestos, some victims exposed to asbestos particles consequently have to seek asbestosis or mesothelioma compensation.

Asbestos can be found in a variety of different materials used in buildings. Asbestos cement products were frequently used which can be found in pipes and roofs, as well as in lagging which can be found in pipes and boilers.

Water tanks and toilet cisterns may have been built with the aid of asbestos materials, and Asbestos Insulating Board, very similar to typical plasterboard, was also widely used.

Other parts of buildings which may contain asbestos include floor tiles, sprayed coatings, textured decorative coatings and textiles and composites.

Asbestos materials that are in good condition do not pose a risk to residents or workers and should not be disturbed. However, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the materials to check that they do not start deteriorating.

If a person does choose to repair or remove damaged asbestos materials in their home, it is imperative that they wear the correct protective clothing and they follow safe working methods – more information and advice can be found on the HSE website.

Asbestos causes over 4000 deaths every year and young people are at larger risk of developing an asbestos related disease than older people as the body often takes years to develop symptoms after exposure.

Asbestos exposure can cause the victim to develop mesothelioma which is an incurable form of cancer on the lining of the lungs. It can take 15-60 years for symptoms of mesothelioma to develop, and it is almost exclusively a result of exposure to asbestos.
