Hoping to defy his doctors' predictions the man decided to go down to his local bookmaker and place a bet of £100 at odds of 50/1 that he would still be around on June 1 2008.
Thankfully, it was a bet well placed. The bookmakers had to pay out £5,000. But, not content with one winning bet, he decided to bet a further £100, again add odds of 50/1, that he would still be alive a further 12 months down the line, on June 1, 2009.
The 59-year-old again confounded the odds, winning another payout of £5,000 of his own particular brand of mesothelioma compensation.
He told press, "When I was diagnosed I was told mesothelioma was a death sentence.
"I wasn't that fussed because everyone has to die some time. But the interesting thing for me was how long it would take, would it take weeks or years.
The widower says that most of the money will go to cancer charities such as Macmillan, "I know I'm going to die eventually and I have no real need for money, so it will mostly go to worthy causes."
