Exposure to asbestos can lead to debilitating diseases for which, at the time of writing, there is no cure. Mesothelioma compensation is therefore often sought by victims of the deadly disease to recompense for the care and treatment they require for this rare form of cancer.
Doctors currently use a mixture of treatments to treat mesothelioma. Patients face a combination of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy to try to shrink the cancer and prolong the patient's life.
These therapies are aggressive and invasive which makes them unsuitable for some patients who are too weak to withstand such treatments. Scientists around the world have therefore been trying to find new more effective therapies that will not only be less invasive on the patient, but will also provide a cure rather than just prolonging the patient's life.
Several studies have now been conducted on immunotherapy which is a treatment that attempts to stimulate the immune system to reject and destroy tumours using host defences. When the treatment is successful, the patient's strengthened immune system will cause the tumour to shrink.
Clinical trials of the treatments have already taken place in both Holland and Washington D.C. In 2010 scientists began testing on human subjects after successful research carried out on mice. The human trials involved injecting subjects suffering from the disease with a vaccine that combines a patient's cells with antigens from their tumour.
The treatment uses cediranib maleate which is a compound that sticks to and inhibits the growth of a cancerous tumour by stopping the enzymes needed for cell growth and blood flow. While at the moment the treatment is only effective in reducing the size of the tumour, it is hoped in time that other compounds can be used to improve the treatment leading to a complete cure of the disease.
Until a cure is found, mesothelioma sufferers should try to gain legal advice to ensure that they receive the compensation they deserve for their mesothelioma.
