Mesothelioma compensation and new treatment trial announcement
Mesothelioma is an aggressive, malignant cancer most commonly found in the lungs of people who have been exposed to asbestos. There is no known cure and for many sufferers, claiming mesothelioma compensation is a last resort to reclaim any quality of life or financial security for the future of dependants.
There are three main treatments for mesothelioma; radiation therapy, chemotherapy and lung removal surgery. There is no cure for mesothelioma and, like most cancers, the prognosis often depends on how early the diagnosis is made and how aggressively it is treated. Unfortunately, the asbestos-related cancer is most usually discovered at a stage in which a cure is unobtainable. Many sufferers will succumb to the disease within one to two years of diagnosis.
New research into Mesothelioma treatments
Research into mesothelioma treatment is constant and varied. The Herbert Irving Cancer Centre in New York, in conjunction with the Columbia University Medical Centre, has undertaken a clinical research study of a new targeted radiation and chemotherapy protocol for pleural mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung's lining that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos.
Dr Robert Taub, the study's principal investigator, said, "Current surgical and chemotherapy treatments of patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma are unsatisfactory, and have not been shown to significantly prolong survival. In this study, we will investigate whether a combination of chemotherapy and radiation targeted directly at the lung's lining can improve outcomes while avoiding surgery.
"In addition, this approach has shown to have minimal toxic side effects compared to systematic chemotherapy."
Patients enrolled on the trial will receive targeted chemotherapy using the drugs cisplatin and doxorubicin via surgically implanted catheters. Some patients will be randomly selected to receive additional intravenous chemotherapy using the drugs cisplatin and pemetrexed. All patients will receive targeted radiotherapy using the P-32 radioisotope.
Researchers anticipate that the radiation therapy will eradicate cancer cells on the lung's surface while sparing other parts of the lung and surrounding vital tissues. They aim to offer patients the most advanced treatment that medical technology can offer, whilst working to preserve quality of life.
Dr Joshua Sonett, a study co-investigator, said, "Overall it is hoped that this study will decrease the need for patients to undergo radical surgery."
