As mesothelioma compensation claimants will know, cytohistology remains the most effective method for diagnosing mesothelioma. However, many diagnostic problems still remain and, tragically, many sufferers receive diagnosis at so late a stage into the progression of the cancer that their prognosis can only ever be bleak.
As a result of these diagnostic problems, for some years now researchers have been searching for a biomarker (biological molecule that can be used to indicate the presence of the cancer) in order to effect earlier and more definitive diagnosis.
In 2007, the Pulmonary and Thoracic Oncology Department, Hopital Calmette, Lille, France, carried out research into the usefulness of the biological molecule osteopontin as a mesothelioma biomarker. Unfortunately, despite noting osteopontin's presence as a possible indicator of mesothelioma, the researchers concluded this particular biomarker could only be used as part of a part of program of informal monitoring.
Confusingly, other researchers have reached different findings. One piece of research, carried out by the Department of Surgery, Wayne State University, Karmanos Cancer Institute, concluded that levels of osteopontin were higher in mesothelioma patients than those with other asbestos-related diseases, and as such could be used as a biomarker to differentiate between mesothelioma and non-cancerous asbestos-related conditions such as pleural plaques.
A further two studies have confirmed that osteopontin is not the definitive biomarker scientists are hoping for. One of these, carried out by researchers at Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medic, concluded that the biological molecule could be used as a prognostic marker, but was too inaccurate an indicator to be used diagnostically; while an Australian study cast further doubt on the usefulness of osteopontin by saying it exhibited little mesothelioma-specific occurrence.
Although these studies would indicate that a mesothelioma biomarker might still be some way off, hope remains and scientists continue to investigate new diagnostic methods that might one day benefit the mesothelioma compensation claimants of the future.
