Fighting mesothelioma with charity funds in the North East

As front-of-shop health professionals, pharmacists will know better than most the scale and impact of asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma in the UK. However fleetingly, they will bear witness to the human cost of exposure and, like personal injury solicitors, will understand the importance of mesothelioma compensation to the lives of those affected by the disease.

That is why, in 2008, pharmacists in the UK's North East joined forces to raise money to fund the fight against mesothelioma. By selling charity merchandise they were able to solicit sponsorship for a 40 mile walk from Whitburn to South Shields.

Louise Lydon, a pharmacist in the area, comments, "Because there are a huge number of people in the North who have contracted mesothelioma due to their background working with the ships, the charity has become a real local thing and it has touched so many.

"Community pharmacists locally have been working hard to raise awareness of lung cancer, especially early signs and symptoms. "Since we are located in the heart of communities, we are the health professional at the end of your street and available for advice without an appointment. "Most pharmacies now benefit from a private consultation area and pharmacists have undertaken five years of training, making us experts in medicines' management."

Meanwhile, Jarrow MP, Stephen Hepburn, added his support to the campaign, and even visited local pharmacies to see firsthand the work they do. "I was delighted to visit Edinburgh Road pharmacy and see for myself the excellent work that takes place in our communities to help raise awareness for this very worthy cause," he said. He also detailed the levels of mesothelioma deaths in the areas in and around his constituency, which represent some of the mesothelioma compensation capitals in the country. "Every year in South Tyneside, approximately 62 people per 1,000 die from the disease almost twice the national average, which is approximately 39 per 100,000," he said. Adding, "It is vital we raise awareness of this disease, which, in turn, will lead to earlier diagnosis that could save many lives."
