Mesothelioma compensation and treatment breakthroughs

Tragically, many mesothelioma compensation claimants never live long to benefit from a financial settlement and the sums instead pass to their families and dependents.

However, there are some who defy prognosis to live for a number of years, despite their terminal condition.

There are a number of treatments and lifestyle changes which can be attempted to try to increase life expectancy post-mesothelioma diagnosis, and although there can be no guarantee that any such efforts will reap rewards it is also undoubtedly true that, for example, giving up smoking has a positive effect on life expectancy and can slow the inevitable progress of the cancer.

In addition, there are other steps a patient may choose to take in order to increase life expectancy. However, whether treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery are wanted, or indeed are appropriate, will very much depend on the individual patient and the opinion of his or her consultant.

However, in June 2011 a promising development was reported in Annals of Thoracic Journey, which gave hope to many mesothelioma compensation claimants that they might be able to live longer following a diagnosis. It concerned a study which showed that there was an improvement in overall survival rate for patients who undergo a combined treatment of lung-sparing surgery and photodynamic therapy.

An author of the study commented, "Unlike patients who receive traditional lung sacrificing surgery for mesothelioma, the patients in our study who underwent lung sparing surgery and photodynamic therapy, a light-based cancer treatment, have experienced unusually long overall survival rates. The median survival for those patients had not been reached at over two years when the results were analysed. That's unusual in this field, especially when the majority of those patients are older and have advanced cancer."
