Accusations of mesothelioma misrepresentation show deeper disagreement

A 2008 issue of the New Statesman looked at the history of corporate approaches to the threat of mesothelioma and lung cancer resulting from the use of asbestos. The online version of the article saw an argument begin regarding one of the reports that had informed the piece, and the potential misreadings of the data within it.

The scientific study in question was produced by Hodgson and Darton in 2000, and presented an overview of research that had been done previously into asbestos and cancer as an industrial disease resulting from exposure.

While the earlier comments limited themselves to the morality of the large businesses that had, according to the article, not given enough regard to its workers, one voice spoke up in defence of chrysotile, one form of asbestos, claiming that this was less dangerous as it could be removed from the lungs as other forms could not, and citing the Hodgson and Darton report.

Within 24 hours of this happening, the editor of Annals of Hygiene, the journal in which the report had appeared, had been persuaded to respond to the defending voice, who he claimed was misrepresenting the report in the same manner as the House of Commons had in 2002. He also offered a link to a free PDF version of the document (available at http://annhyg.oxfordjournals.org) to anyone who wished to check the original data.

Even with heavyweight opposition such as this, the pro-chrysotile voice reiterated his point, beginning an interchange of views over the level of risk of disease that the mineral, commonly believed to be potentially fatal, poses. While the editor agrees that the risk is greater from large doses of crocidolite than from small doses of chrysotile, he denies that the smaller risk can be called negligible.
