Exposure to asbestos often can be fatal to its victims, and people who have unknowingly been subjected to it either in a public place or through their employment can go on to develop mesothelioma cancer.
Asbestos used to be a popular material for insulation of buildings, but the damage asbestos could cause to the human body was only later discovered and, unfortunately, there is no cure for mesothelioma, which damages the lungs.
However, research in cancer is always progressing, and in August 2011, the Royal Marsden Hospital announced it was offering mesothelioma sufferers the option to participate in trials attempting to find a cure.
The Royal Marsden is a world-renowned centre for cancer treatment and its doctors have been collaborating with scientists to try to find a way to beat mesothelioma.
Often, mesothelioma sufferers have run out of options with conventional drugs and surgery but, of course, want to live as long as possible. The trials were intended to allow these people to test new drugs straight from the laboratory, however, no one knows what the side-effects of such treatments will be until they have been tried for some time. .
The drug development unit, integrated to the hospital, previously targeted drugs at a single cancer, such as breast cancer, or lung cancer. Those drugs only worked on up to a third of patients because every cancer is different.
Instead, the 2011 trials for mesothelioma drugs were aimed at particular mutations in the cancer and were tested on a smaller group of patients.
The trials were due to last for two to three years and the system was that patients usually had to stay in hospital for the first month, but they were allowed to go home every weekend. Because of this, patients in the trials had to be hugely committed, going back to hospital every week.
Nonetheless, cancer patients can be encouraged when particularly good and sometimes dramatic results emerge from drugs. The hospital has already had successful response rates from a drug preventing cancer returning in women who have previously suffered from breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
The Government has said it is committed to funding and developing a national testing structure.
All patients who participate in the trials were asked to have their results stored, with further details of their treatment and outcomes.
Hopefully, the trials will aid researchers in discovering treatments which can help people with mesothelioma. The research may also assist scientists in uncovering which sorts of tumours are likely to be more aggressive than others.
