Can cryoablation provide hope of a mesothelioma cure?

One of the cruellest aspects of a mesothelioma diagnosis is the absence of a cure. Scientists continue to research medical and surgical possibilities that could combat the condition, however, and one treatment that has been reported as having minor successes is cryoablation.

The word, cryoablation, comes from the Greek for cold and the Latin for wearing away; it is a process through which tumour cells are frozen and rewarmed until they are killed, thus removing the threat they present to the body. It is generally used for prostate and heart operations, but it has been used on sufferers from the asbestos-related lung cancer with some success.

The successes are in the removal of cancerous growths related to the condition, which can offer pain relief and prevent the tumours pressing on other organs. Because the process works by freezing the cells at the tip of a highly chilled probe, it works better on tight collections of cells than on the widely distributed mesothelioma cells, which means it is not yet to be considered a cure.

However, it looks like California is set to adopt the treatment as an official treatment, and it is already available privately. UK sufferers have been reported to have paid for flights to the US for this treatment, and calls are being raised to have the procedure made available in this country - however, research is yet to be published that shows full support for its efficacy.

No reports are yet available of asbestos compensation claims being made successfully that include funds to undergo cryoablation. Claimants who think that their condition could benefit from cryoablation may find it valuable to ask the cancer specialist who is looking after their medical care.
