Mesothelioma Action Day 2009 is the fourth action day since the British Lung Cancer Foundation's inauguration of the awareness campaign in 2006.
An assessment of the inroads made since that important day in 2006 when the Mesothelioma Charter was delivered to Tony Blair at 10 Downing Street is hard to make.
But it is clear that, despite no cure being found for the lung cancer, its prevalence among former asbestos workers continues to attract the coverage it deserves, while for the most part the level of access to compensation for the condition has steadily improved.
Battles have been won. Not least a nine-week High Court case in which personal injury solicitors won a "hugely important victory for victims and families" to receive compensation after insurers controversially tried to invoke the "trigger issue", claiming they could not be considered liable from the date the disease the developed.
This year's Action Day has focussed on calls for more to be done to fund research into treatments and cures for the disease.
Derek Simpson, secretary of Unite, which supports the Action Day, comments, "This horrific disease, caused mainly by exposure to asbestos, has been rife within industries in which our members have traditionally worked, such as engineering, construction, ship-building, and railways. We will continue to fight for those who have been affected to ensure they receive adequate compensation, but our fight will not stop there. We want to make sure adequate resources are available to find better medical treatments and, hopefully, a cure."
John Edwards, chair of the British Mesothelioma Interest Group, agrees, pointing out that research into the disease has been neglected compared to that of other cancers. "Researchers are desperate for funds to develop life-saving treatments," he says.
He adds, "Mesothelioma is far and away the least-researched of the top 20 cancers in the UK. Funding for a UK National Centre for Asbestos-Related Diseases is a priority. Such a virtual institution would encourage collaboration and stimulate research to generate future treatments to prolong and save lives."
Personal injury solicitors are also supporting the Action Day, with many calling for a national database of employers liability insurers, something they believe would expedite the workplace injury and illness claims process.
One industrial disease solicitor comments, "With all mesothelioma claims, time is of the essence. It is a fatal and vicious disease that usually kills its victims within 12 months – and a database of insurers would help speed up the claim process. The ELIB would provide a vital last resort in those cases where an insurer cannot be traced."
