UK obstetric medical negligence forum 2008
On 22 May 2008 the C5 Advanced Forum on Obstetric Negligence was held at Jurys Great Russell Hotel in London. During the forum, the contributors, including, obstetricians, hospital and clinical risk managers, midwives, obstetric nurses, gynaecologists and UK medical negligence lawyers discussed the most significant factors contributing to obstetric negligence claims in the UK today.
One contributor to the forum, Paul McNeil, a leading UK medical negligence lawyer with Field Fisher Waterhouse, delivered a presentation entitled Common Negligent Errors in Obstetric Cases: A Claimant Lawyer's Perspective.
In his presentation McNeil discussed some of issues most commonly affecting birth injury claims in the UK today. He highlighted the misuse of forceps, the misreading of ultrasounds, the misreading of foetal heart rate monitors and the improper use of induction drug syntocinon as some of the challenges to be overcome by obstetric professionals in the British health services.
Following the forum, the clinical negligence lawyer commented, "Obstetric negligence cases cost the NHS hundreds of million pounds every year. It still requires the utmost skill to win a case on behalf of a child with cerebral palsy. Only expert lawyers with specialist experience can deal with such cases. The conference was a useful forum to exchange views and hone skills".
