Cancer misdiagnosis is a concern for the medical negligence solicitor

As the high cost of worldwide healthcare provision came under scrutiny in 2009 a medical negligence solicitor in New York spoke out against budget cuts in the state's free cancer screening programme; warning that ultimately the reduction in service could lead to a rise in personal injury compensation lawsuits.

Reported in a PR Web press release, Preston Douglas said that the philosophy of modern medicine was cost and that when budget cuts in free services are made, those who can't afford private healthcare will suffer.

He stated that misdiagnosis and late diagnosis of cancer are the two most common errors that physicians make.

"There are practical ways to detect these illnesses, but to do it effectively a logical path of diagnosis must be followed.  This is where breakdowns happen, and mistakes are made, when there's not enough money to go around," he said.

Douglas commented that in terms of medical negligence claims the solicitor will look at the harm that was done to the patient and the nature of the care given.

He added, "Since nobody knows the exact moment when a cancer changes from localized to incurable metastatic, it is essential that the paper trail between labs, doctors and patients be traced to be able to determine if any breakdown, or delay in follow-up procedures, made a difference in the health and survival prognosis of the patient."
