Medical negligence misdiagnosis underestimated say researchers

Of all the categories of medical negligence, misdiagnosis is one of the most common. Yet, alarmingly, there is no effective scheme that allows the NHS to report and record these incidents, meaning that the true extent of medical negligence misdiagnosis could actually be drastically underestimated.

A spokesperson from Action Against Medical Accidents comments, "We have 4,000 inquiries a year and of those in primary care a large proportion, perhaps about 50% of cases, involve misdiagnosis of some sort.

"We see no reason why it shouldn't be a legal requirement on healthcare organisations, including general practices, to report incidents that go wrong in healthcare, including incidents of misdiagnosis.

"It's ridiculous that we get so few reports when we know there are significant numbers of this going on already."

In fact, Prof Graham Neale, of the Imperial Centre for Patient Safety and Service Quality at Imperial College London has carried out research into misdiagnosis in the NHS and believes that as many as 15% of all NHS patients may have their conditions misdiagnosed.

Prof Neale says that the problem is particularly pronounced among trainee doctors. "There is absolutely no doubt that this is being underreported, but more importantly they are not being adequately analysed. Trainee doctors are too quick to judgment, that is one of the problems that we face," he said.

And delving a little deeper into the issue only makes the problem appear worse: one in ten hospital patients is believed to have been harmed by the care they received, while one in 10 of all patient complaints relates to some form of diagnostic failure.
