Medical negligence lawyers supporting the Contaminated Blood Bill

In late 2009 the UK medical negligence lawyer community backed calls for greater compensation for victims of a 1970s and 1980s blood scandal that resulted in 4,670 haemophiliacs being given hepatitis C contaminated blood, of these 1,243 were also infected with HIV.

Many a medical negligence lawyer backed the sentiments of Lord Morris of Manchester who has tabled a private bill on the issue and called the scandal the "worst ever treatment disaster in the history of the NHS."

Lord Morris said he hoped that the bill would help the "small and stricken community of barely 5,000 people already disabled by a rare lifelong blood disorder, requiring continuous medical treatment".

Labour Peer Lord Archer echoed this view when he said that the contamination had been "a horrific human tragedy".

The tragedy came about, in part, because of the NHS buying blood from the United States which had been taken from so-called skid-row blood donors - those who were prison inmates or intravenous drug users.

So far, all the haemophiliacs affected have received a one-off injury compensation payment of £20,000. However, the Contaminated Blood (Support for Infected and Bereaved Persons) Bill seeks to provide for a more comprehensive compensation package offering free prescriptions, counselling, home nursing and occupational therapy.

Many of those affected by the scandal have now passed away. However, family members bereaved by the scandal may benefit from any compensation payments stemming from the private members' bill.
