Medical negligence to the highest degree

While most of us entrust our lives to healthcare professionals when we are unwell, others are simply terrified of "what could be" and have deep concerns they might suffer medical negligence.

The thousands of cases of medical negligence reported in the UK every year cost the NHS somewhere in the region of the £560 million. Perhaps the most horrific example is the series of murders committed by the man christened the Angel of Death, Dr Harold Shipman.

Over a period of 23 years Shipman was reported to have killed 215 of his patients and some sources have suggested that he may have killed as a many as 400. His victims were mostly women and their ages ranged from 41 to 91 years.

One of the most worrying things is that these murders occurred even though there were measures in place meant to prevent them. Another major cause for concern is that there was no suspicion of what had gone on for many years.

South Manchester coroner John Pollard knew and worked with Shipman and he commented, "I think the only valid possible explanation for it is that he simply enjoyed viewing the process of dying and enjoyed the feeling of control over life and death, literally over life and death."

The convicted serial killer maintained his innocence to the end and took his own life by hanging himself with bed sheets from the bars of his prison cell in 2004.

Unfortunately, similar horrific acts of medical negligence have been committed by other doctors, nurses, therapists, hospital workers and proprietors of care facilities throughout history, some of these are mentioned below:

  • Dr Michael Swango killed patients because it gave him a feeling of power.
  • Paediatric nurses, Beverly Allitt and Genene Jones killed young patients as a cry for attention.
  • Dr Marcel Petiot and Dr H H Holmes killed purely for money.
  • Dr Josef Mengele killed because of political beliefs.
