In 2008, a US medical negligence compensation case came to light involving a woman who suffered septic shock after a severe infection went untreated by medical teams in New York.
The woman presented to Brooklyn Hospital Centre complaining of severe pain, but a misdiagnosis was made of kidney stones and the patient was discharged with pain killers. In the following 24 hours she called the emergency services twice more, but medics did not take her back for hospital care.
In fact, the 32-year-old was suffering from acute kidney failure which developed into a severe sepsis infection.
When her fiancé took her back to the emergency room the following day, the gangrene had taken such a hold that her hands and feet had to be amputated to save her life. The infection also choked the blood supply to her optic nerve thus rendering her blind in her left eye and severely sight-impaired in the other.
The quadruple amputee undertook extensive treatment at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitative Medicine and, shortly before Christmas 2008, took her first steps on temporary foot prosthetics less than three months after the life-saving operation to remove her limbs.
The young mother went on to sue the hospital and the city of New York reportedly claiming $100 million in damages.
